The carpeted floors in your home offer warmth and comfort for you and your family to enjoy. They can be a beautiful and elegant center point to a room. Getting yourself into a habit of simple cleaning and maintenance will ensure that your carpet will last many years and retain it's beauty and vibrancy.

A heavily trafficked area will eventually start to turn darker as it embeds the miniscule dirt and grit particles from shoes into the carpet fibers. The continued use and the friction of the shoes rubbing against the carpet fibers will result in the area being worn down. If the area stays dirty for a long period and it isn't cleaned often, damage done to the carpet may be permanent. An easy remedy to this problem is to make sure you and your guests remove your shoes or boots at the door.

Food can also cause damage to a carpet. Spilling or dropping certain food and drink can cause straining that is difficult, if not impossible, to remove. You can prevent this by not allowing children to eat certain foods in rooms with carpeting. Unfortunately, spills are unavoidable accidents but can be prevented by lessening the frequency of eating and drinking in that room. It is necessary to remove spills as soon as they happen to lessen the chance of the stain setting.

Direct sunlight can also cause permanent damage to your carpet. Eventually, if it is subjected to direct sunlight often and for prolonged period of time, your carpet will begin to fade or become discolored. This damage cannot be reversed, but it can be prevented. Make sure that any rooms that receive direct sunlight have curtains that can be drawn whenever the room isn't in use.
