I recently purchase several sq ft of laminate from Floorfactory. I spoke with the salesperson John, who is also one of three owners. I discovered the store online, and decided to come by and take a look. When I visited, I was not intending to purchase the laminate. I was going to either have my contractor purchase them or wait until I perform the work. The slated time for the work was 2 or 3 weeks away. I told John about the time frame, and also about the amount square footage I was looking to install. Before leaving, John seemingly did me a favor by letting me know about the "special" contractor discount to the public that was expiring that day. He elaborated, saying since I was buying such a large quantity that I should know about the discount. He told me that it was 10% off. I inquired about the discount, about the "contractor" price. He further elaborated by telling me that contractors would be upset if they knew he was selling to us (public) at the contractor's price. As a result, I purchased a large amount in advance to take advantage of such a seemingly rare and fortunate opportunity.
I sent my contractor to pick up the product. While picking them up, John tried to secure my contractor's services, and offered my contractor a different price for the laminate, much different than the “contractor's prices” he offered me. John offered my contractor a price of 1.29, but I paid 2.51 after the 10% discount. (This is for the Anthracite) I don't mind paying more, but when somebody lies to secure a sales, that's just unethical and plainly, wrong.
To makes things worst, John told me the floor is as good anything on the market, including Quick-step that I referred to. But when I got the floor installed, my floor installer told me unlike regular laminates (quick step and shaw I have installed in the past), this floor scratches very easily, and chips/flakes off much easier than quick-step. I verified it by scratching it with a quarter. Unbelievable. It's no wonder he can sell it at 1.29, and mark it up to 2.79. From an initial glance, it looks good. It's not until you install it, that you discover that it's poorly glued and put together.
Needless to say, I should have only trusted a name brand. Not to say small companies can't produce a good product, but bigger companies have the R&D department and resources to ensure a quality product. And since they're big, they and their products are more accountable to the public. I'm such a fool. I should have stuck with my original plan of buying Quick-step or Shaw. You should never take chances with floors.
