I live in a condo that has kinda confusing guidelines about replacing the carpetting with laminate, hardwood, tile, marble, etc.  Basically, we have to match the sound-dampening level of the existing carpeting.  And, of course, we don't know what that is.

I understand, though, that there are sound-dampening underlays for hard flooring?  Does anyone know where I can get more information about this?  Or can anyone tell me whether these underlays actually do work well?

Cork is an excellent sound deadner. Check out acousticork. They make cork underlay.
