your question rings a bell because not long ago, my husband and I were in the same position.

I love dark furniture and wanted a dark - chestnut/cherrry kitchen. And we were getting honey/golden flooring (to match with some flooring we had in the foyer). Then we felt the cabinets would crowd the dark furniture in the living/dining and family rooms so we went with an antique maple finish. (The floors we realised would look awful with this choice) We finally decided to keep the flooring in maple tones as well and have the trims/toekicks on the kitchen cabinets dark cherry to offset other darker stain tones in the house.

Having the same colour could be too much of it but then again it is individual taste. You can pick up free kitchen catalogues from home stores and check out the web for samples and inspiration.
