Hello, everyone.

I have never installed laminate, but have installed ceramic tile several times.  I want laminate in my basement, which has a concrete floor, but I'd prefer to not have to install a 2x4 subfloor.  My local Lowes installer said I can install laminate, along with the vapor barrier and pad, right on my concrete.  But my big question is, will it be cold?  I can build the subfloor, but would rather not.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It should be generally a little warmer then a bare concrete floor. If you have existing carpet,  then it will be cooler on the feet then the carpet. Perhaps you should look at upgrading your pad to get a little more warmth.

I'd love to get it as comfortable as carpet.  What would be the best type of padding to put under the laminate for warmth?

Or would it be worth the extra work to build a subfloor and insulate it?

(Thanks for the help!)

It doesn't sound worth it to me.  How 'tall' will this subfloor be.  I have a friend that has laminate on cement in his basement and I didn't really find it to be a big difference between that and carpet.

Low temperature will not be a problem. Concrete floor can be used as subfloor for laminate flooring direclty as long as it is even, dry and clean.
